More CAL…

Hello Lovely Blog Readers, how are you all? The sun is out and the sky is blue, its holidays this week, I am wearing my new purple patent sandals and the coffee is just made. Later today Mr P is off to collect a welsh dresser which we got on eBay yesterday. Soooo exciting! Things could not be much better really. Hope you are all feeling as good too.

Here I am with more CAL for you. I’m still having quandaries over whether to frog some blocks or maybe just buy four more balls of yarn. I looked yesterday and nowhere has all the colours I want in stock right now. I need to decide very soon though or I will have nothing to continue with!!!! Todays music for blogging to is The Joy Formidable – The Big Roar, lots of lovely, big guitariness.

Onwards we go with CAL blocks…

Terraces is my favourite and my best of this selection. Very pretty and quite textural and 3D-ish. Have to say it will be nice when its all finished because I am starting to get a bit fed up with using the same colours now! I like the stitch on Sequenced Stripes too – a nice change from all the boring stripy dc blocks and quite pretty.

Oh I forgot to mention…block 90… it gave me as much trouble as that very first block, Triangle Stripes, and kept coming out wonky. My own fault because I was being lazy and not counting stitches but I cracked it in the end, after about three attempts, and I still didn’t count the stitches ;)

Kingcup is perfect here for a Cottage Garden blanket.

Right thats it for today. The next CAL post is a very special one. Have a very fantastic weekend.

Speak soon Lovely Blog Readers

At last… let the catch up begin!!!

Morning Lovely Blog Readers, how are you all?? Well the SATs are over, the boys are at karate, the coffee is made, the camera is fixed (I think) and all is well with the world. Todays music for blogging to is Mumford and Sons – Babel. Bizarre, but after I mentioned QOTSA the other week and janeygingerboy said “not heard them in a while”, there they were in all their glory on Jools Holland!

Ok, lets get on with the crochet. I have a confession to make. I DEFINITELY did block 79 Baltic Square but I can’t find it!!! Its hiding somewhere in the house, perhaps buried amongst other crafty things that have not been touched for a while in the attic. Its a green one. So I can’t put a photo of it today, you will have to wait for that one until I find it!!! So we will press ahead from 80 onwards….

They all look a bit wonky don’t they! Rather too much pink too!! Ok, here’s the next block…

I really like the Edwardian Fancy best. Peony is very right for our cottage garden theme too.

As far as I remember, I had no problems with making any of these blocks. As Rachell said the other day, this has been an excellent way to learn and practice crochet. My confidence has increased loads and I no longer have to check the back of the book for instructions for the less common stitches like I had to at the beginning. I think I might need support if I were to try clothing like jumpers, cardigans etc. as I haven’t tried anything like that but I’m not really keen to try them anyway right now. I’m happy with simple shapes.

Well the coffee is gone (made some for Mr P and put it on the aga to keep warm for him but it was too good so I have drunk his too!!!!) and we are on the last track on the album so it must be time to go. Back soon with more of the same, don’t want to overwhelm you.

Enjoy your weekend everyone.

Time for a Catch Up Again… Or maybe not!

Hello again Lovely Blog Readers, how are you all?? Enjoying your weekend??

Do you remember this post Readers?? Well its that weekend again. I enjoyed it soooooo much last year and was really looking forward to it this year but sadly we won’t be there as we have family duties to attend to – the birthdays of my two nephews. It will be back next year no doubt and the boys will get tired of it if they are dragged along every year. And there is this next week too I think, so we might have to go there instead.

Since I got back from my Scottish Adventure I have been beavering away in the evenings with the CAL in an effort to catch up a bit. The pile of completed blocks next to my chair has steadily grown and I thought it was time to get them posted.

But it appears I am having camera problems today. I got the blocks out, ordered them, pressed them and started photographing. Wasn’t happy with the results so altered the settings and started again. Then the batteries went. Then the camera was saying “read error” and I seemed to have lost my pictures. So I started again. This time the pictures were definitely there but I couldn’t get them onto the computer!!! Think I might need a new SD card. Total Frustration!!!

Any how… these were already uploaded so you can look at these. Many, many more to follow soon

Not the most exciting blocks – there are some much prettier ones in the heap I have just tried to photograph! I like Briar Rose though. I am beginning to get low on yarn and I don’t really want to buy another full batch, especially knowing that I don’t intend to use all the blocks I have made and that we are getting towards the end of the book now, so I am considering having a sort through and frogging some of the ones I am less than impressed with???

Mr P has been hunting around to see if he has another SD card I can use but has had no luck. Better go shopping then!

Until later people xx

Hello Lovely Blog Readers, how are you today??

Do you remember this post? Remember the beautiful treasure from Avis at Oh Sew Tempting? And do you remember that a little while ago I had a long awaited date with my sewing machine? Well, when I went upstairs to my workspace I rediscovered my treasure and decided to have a play with it. I had another idea brewing in my head for a little while and some of the fabric Avis had sent me was perfect for it.

BJ has had a bit of a hard time recently having been assessed and diagnosed with Dyslexia and Dyspraxia. He has been feeling sorry for himself and I thought he might need cheering up. Something to make him feel loved. We have been advised, amongst many other things, to encourage him to use some specially designed pens and pencils to help him with his writing skills. So I decide to make him his own, very special, one of a kind, pencil case to keep them in. Would you like to see it??? Ta daaaa…..

DSCF3058

I got most of the fabric cut, pieced and quilted in my first session. Then I needed supplies – a zip, and it took a while to have the opportunity to get back to it to finish it off. But it is done now and I think he likes it very much. Its not perfect but I am pleased with it. The other side is patchwork too and has buttons and his name embroidered on it.

Now of course, I have to make another for LJ who has requested pirate fabric. I thought he might like the hedgehogs Avis. He did, but he didn’t like the hearts that were with the hedgehogs sadly.

Fish? On a Ladder???

Hello again Lovely Blog People. I hope you are all enjoying your weekend? An extra long one here and lovely weather too, lucky us. More of that later though.

This is the final instalment about our recent Scottish boating adventures. After our stop-over in Northumberland and a quick visit to Mr P’s brother we set off on our leisurely trip to Inverness once more. This time we stopped briefly for lunch at Pitlochry which is a lovely place. It was at a convenient point in our journey to stop but we also had an ulterior motive for it too.

In his younger days Mr P’s Dad (lets call him Mr P Senior) worked as a civil engineer and one of his projects was to help design the Pitlochry Hydro-electric Dam and we thought it would be good to take the boys to see what Grandad made. So,on a warmer day than at Northumberlandia and after a yummy lunch in a local cafe, we set off exploring.

Pitlochry Hydro-electric Dam

Pitlochry Hydro-electric Dam

Mr P Senior specifically worked on one particular aspect of the dam which was the fish ladder. A fish ladder allows the salmon to travel upstream at breeding time without them getting stuck at the dam. You can read more about it here. We walked up the right hand side of the river through the trees then over the top dam to find the fish ladder.

Not sure if you can make it out from the pictures, but the fish start at the bottom in the river then travel gradually up the ladder, through a series of tunnels and pools along one side of the access road. They then go under the road, doubling back on themselves and travel along the other side of the road to reach the top of the dam and the water at the higher level.

The observation window allows you to see under the water to watch the fish swimming through the tunnels from pool to pool. Sadly we saw no fish, obviously not breeding season!

I think the boys enjoyed their visit to a little piece of family history and were suitably impressed too. It was of course beautiful Scottish scenery and a very pleasant walk. Worth a visit if you are in the area.

Hopefully I will be back soon with some CAL news, as this seems to have become a bit of a travel blog lately! I have been hooking away madly in an effort to catch up a bit again so I will post my progress soon.

Enjoy the sunshine people. xx

The Lady of The North

Hello Dear Virtual and Real Readers, how are you all today???

Karate time here so all is quiet (well except for the Queens of the Stone Age playing loudly, but I don’t do total silence very often). I’m back to tell you about more of our recent adventures. Its a VERY long way to Inverness, by UK standards anyway. So on the way we took our time and enjoyed the journey with a couple of sight seeing trips and an overnight stop. The first of these was a visit to Northumberlandia, the Lady of the North.

DSCF3154

The view from her forehead.

I have wanted to visit her for some time and this was the perfect chance for a quick trip. She has been created from a disused part of a surface coal mine. She is relatively new, work only started on her in 2010 so I think its fair to say she hasn’t quite settled in to her new home. You can read more about her here. Apparently she is not going to be a perfectly manicured park, but is going to be allowed to grow with nature, so it will be good to visit her again in different season in several years to see how she has changed. If I lived closer to her I think it would be somewhere to visit regularly.

It was a bright sunny day but the wind was freezing cold so we had our picnic (some yummy locally made rolls and cakes) in the car then went to explore. to We followed the paths to the top of her head and, boys being boys, we had to go and stand on one of her breasts!! Big J wanted to see if she had any bogies and pick her nose but fortunately we had to stick to the paths. By that time the wind had given me earache so we went back to the car to continue on our way to our stopover and a visit to see Mr P’s brother at his new home.

To Be Continued!

Intrepid Nessie Hunting.

Hello Friends, how are you all? Good? Bet you were wondering where I was again? Well, we have had a very exciting time at Patch HQ, or rather, away from it. We have been on away holiday during the Easter break and then it was straight back into work this week so I am only now getting a minute at the computer to write this. Mr P and Big J are still having an exciting time as they are away at Cub Camp this weekend. They will be back later today and no doubt worn out,  badly in need of a bath and with a mountain of washing for me! It is very strange without them. Both Little J and I have felt quite sad and missed them a lot.

Anyway, back to the subject in hand… holidays. Many of you know that we often spend our holidays afloat (see this post) and this one was no different in that respect. In many other ways it was very different though. Our Green Boat is moored back at base this year which means cruising around the canals in the London area, which we have already done quite a lot of in the past so Mr P suggested we hired a boat elsewhere instead. There are certain pieces of canal in the UK which don’t connect to any other canals, which can only be accessed by travelling around the coast or by having your boat craned onto a lorry and sent up the motorway. Traditional narrowboats are not really made for travelling on the sea (they don’t have much of a keel) but can do it if necessary but its not easy. So this seemed like the perfect excuse to visit one of these more remote pieces of canal and that is what we did.

We hired a cruiser from this company at Inverness on the Caledonian Canal in Scotland. We arrived on Saturday lunchtime, completed our training session and set off before mid afternoon. Our instructor accompanied us as far as the first lock and then we were on Loch Ness! So exciting! (I can see this might get confusing so I’ll explain before we go any further…. “lock” refers to the means to move boats up and down hills on the canal, and “loch” is the gaelic word for a lake. On this journey we have both).

Loch Ness

Loch Ness

Loch Ness is a much bigger body of water than we are used to normally and we were given strict instructions by our instructors to keep a sharp eye on the weather as it can get quite windy and choppy and unpleasant out there. The boys were quite excited to be doing a bit of monster hunting and kept a sharp eye out for Nessie.

Urquart Bay, our mooring for the first night.

So our route started in Inverness and took us down through Loch Ness, Loch Oich  and Loch Lochy and then back again. We could go no further because Loch Linnhe is a sea loch.

Urquart Castle, Loch Ness

We were very lucky with the weather for most of the week. We had a little rain on the Saturday afternoon and woke on the Sunday morning to a dusting of snow, but after that it was mostly dry but VERY cold so we are very wrapped up in the pictures. Our final afternoon we had no breeze at all and sunshine so we managed to shed our outer layers and had a picnic and a spot of fishing on Loch Ness before returning the boat to the marina, it finished off the week very nicely.

The boat itself was very different to what we are used to. Many traditional narrowboat owners frown upon cruisers and they are sometimes referred to as “plastic bathtubs”. All boats have their strengths and weaknesses and it was very interesting comparing it to our usual green boat. Grandma Patch especially liked how the kitchen was organised, and thought it superior to the one on the green boat. You can see photos of the inside here. If I had to choose between a narrowboat and a cruiser, the narrowboat would win outright, but this was perfectly suitable for our week.

It was an interesting and exciting week. There was lots happening on Loch Ness on our last day with RAF jets screaming past very low and close and the coastguard helicopter doing training rescue exercises over the loch. We never did manage to find Nessie although we did see some suspicious looking ripples on the water that appeared to have no obvious cause! The boys brought home their own cuddly Nessies to remember their holiday. I did take my crochet with me but did not touch it all week partly because I was so tired every evening but also because I had my nose glued to a book! I am now trying to make up for it and catch up with the CAL a bit. More on that soon.

Something to look forward to.

Hello Dear Readers, I hope the sun is shining on you wherever you are??? More snow today here! Not stopped all day.

But here’s something to cheer us all up. Grandma P told me about this a couple of days ago and I have got a teeny bit excited since.sewing beeThis is a new series starting next week on BBC2. Its supposed to be the sewing version of Bake Off and we all LOOOOOVVVVVVVE Bake Off. You can read about it here. The picture above is the cover of the book that goes with the series. I haven’t seen a copy of the book yet so I don’t know if its any good and I am really trying to keep my excitement in check because I hate it when things don’t live up to my expectations. But, fingers crossed. It would be really good to see some sewing on tv. I’m definitely curious, how about you??

Hello people. These last two photos were taken after school today, about 500m down the road from my house. The drifts are about 7ft high! LJ loved it. Now… who has seen the sun???

Hello Lovely Readers, hope you are happy and well??? We are a house of illness this weekend with only LJ not ill. Luckily we had a snow day yesterday so we have plenty of time for recovery before Monday.

Look at my garden this morning…

DSCF3114

And the snow is still falling! This time last year some parts of the UK were a lovely 20 degrees. Come on Spring… where are you???

Do you remember the date I had with my sewing machine a few weeks back? Well here is a little something I created that day. There is something else which is following in another post. Now I have to confess to having a bit of inspiration from Noelle (thanks Noelle!) with this. If you click on that link it will take you to her excellent tutorial about using fabric circles. I have been meaning to have a go at this for soooo long.

This is the first time I have made a little zippy pouch/purse and it was partly driven by need. The zip on my own purse (or wallet if you are in the USA) had broken and all the coins kept falling out into the bottom of my bag. Not fun when you are madly trying to find your bus fare! BJ had done some sewing in school before Christmas (which I helped with) and had made me a beautiful felt purse which I was very proud of and used for a few months instead. Here it is…

DSCF3120

DSCF3122

They tested different stitches to decide which one would be the strongest/most decorative to use for their purse and then designed and made their own. I am very impressed with his work. Due to his Dyspraxia he really struggles with fine motor skills and sewing so neatly must have taken real effort from him. It is decorated with glued on felt hearts which soon started to fall off so I decided to make myself something else before his wonderful work was truly ruined. That would have been too sad. Instead I shall find another use for it at home.

So here is my purse…

DSCF3102

The purse is not bad, but far from perfect. I was following another tutorial for the construction of the purse and didn’t read it all the way through before starting and consequently constructed it wrongly but you can only tell on the inside so its fine for me to use. I think there maybe more of these to follow so I will get plenty of opportunity to perfect my technique. The zip was ok but again I think I could perfect my technique. Rainbow Junkie if you look closely you will see one of the buttons which you sent to me when I won this :D
DSCF3106You can see the lining on this picture – pale blue with big white spots. I have been using it for a little while now and yesterday I had my first compliment from a stranger in a shop. I went to the local post office to post some parcels and the lady that runs it commented on my purse. I was very pleased as she also sells lots of pretty, hand crafted gifty things in her shop…. perhaps one day…. who knows???
