Lockdown… Book Up?? (Yarning Along 23)

The lockdown book-fest has continued through May, although perhaps at a slightly slower pace. I have finished three books during May and started my fourth…

The Telephone Box Library by Rachael Lucas was light and pleasant enough with a happy ever after ending. It has pretty much left my head now.

Norse Mythology by Neil Gaiman was a total contrast to The Telephone Box Library. I like contrast. It was also a different kind of book for me to read. Neil Gaiman takes on the role of a fireside storyteller in this book and has changed the style of his writing to match, often making sentences quite short and to the point. There is much less descriptive writing than you would normally find in a novel and this took a little adjusting to. There is humour though and I did find myself laughing out loud sometimes and rolling my eyes at Loki’s antics and the other gods attitudes towards him. Initially I wasn’t enjoying it, almost to the point of thinking I might stop reading it, but I persevered and I am so glad I did because I have a new perspective on Norse gods now. It’s worth a look if you are interested.

Daisy Jones and The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid – I had wanted to read this for about a year so when the lovely Rachel informed me it was a Kindle Daily Deal I snapped it up… Thank you Rachel. I loved this book and was so sad when it ended, and without any obvious possibility of a sequel either. It’s a story about a beautiful singer/songwriter teaming up with a successful band in the 70s and all the excitement and chaos that follows. I found all the characters very real and believable and you do start to wonder if they were actually a real band. It is being turned into a miniseries by Amazon but I think it would make an excellent movie – I’d love to hear the soundtrack. Random House have put together a Daisy Jones and The Six playlist on Spotify and you might even find yourself having Fleetwood Mac on heavy rotation. I will be watching when it comes on to Amazon.

Once Upon A River by Diane Setterfield – another Kindle Daily Deal flagged up by Rachel! This is my current book and so far I am loving it, it’s very mysterious and intriguing. The characters are believable and I particularly like Rita, the nurse. Can’t wait to find out what happens in this one.

Here is my other type of yarn…

Having finished the Close To You shawl I could start my Crojo Retro blanket. I am very excited about this – such pretty flowers. I will tell you more about this very soon.

    • Yes,I read it was loosely based on Fleetwood Mac too… Totally made me dig out “Rumours”!!! The river book is a brilliant tale and she has an excellent storytelling voice (much more to my taste then Neil Gaiman’s attempt at one!).
